France has a temperate climate in the northern regions of the country; northeastern areas however are subject to a more continental climate with warm summers but colder winters. Lorraine, sheltered by bordering hills, has a relatively mild climate.

You will find that rainfall is distributed throughout the year with some snow likely in winter, particularly in the northern half of the country, or of course, in the more mountainous regions, such as the Alpes, Pyrenees, Masif Central and the Vosges - although the French slopes of the Pyrenees are renowned for their sunshine record.

In the south - ie: the Riviera, Provence and Roussillon, you will find a warm and sunny Mediterranean climate. The climate in the western coastal areas, from the Loire to the Basque region, is influenced by the Atlantic,  and here the weather is temperate and relatively mild in fact Summers can be very hot and sunny but with some rainfall is likely throughout the year.

Inland areas are mild with Continental weather to be expected in Auvergne, Burgundy and the Rhône Valley.
